Nigeria will soon be self-sufficient in cement production – Minister

on AUGUST 1, 2011 · in NEWS

Lagos : The Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr Olusegun Aganga, said on Monday that cement importation would soon be a thing of the past in Nigeria.

Aganga, who spoke while inspecting the level of work at the Dangote cement plant, Ibeshe, Ogun, said the country was on the verge of being self-sufficient in cement production.

He said that when completed, the Ibeshe plant would be capable of producing six million tonnes of cement yearly.

“My intention of coming here is to know where we are in the concept of backward integration policy of government, so that government can set a target for indigenous manufacturers.

“From what I have seen here, the Dangote Cement is a success story. I am pleased and satisfied with the high pace of work and very optimistic that Nigeria will soon become self-sufficient in cement production.

“I must say that much has been achieved by Dangote Cement in an attempt to meet local demand. Government will like to replicate these exploits in the production of rice, sugar and wheat,” he said.

Aganga urged other businessmen to emulate the entrepreneurship skills of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the President of the Dangote Group, by setting up firms that would create employment opportunities and boost the nation’s economy.

Dangote said that the company’s investment in the Nigerian economy was part of its strategy of moving away from outright importation to local manufacturing.

Dangote said that the strategy had drastically reduced the country’s import bill.

“The Ibese plant is part of the expansion drive of the Dangote Group to ensure that by 2012 the country will be self-sufficiency in cement production while the excess will be exported.

“The Ibese plant is an automated factory with constant online monitoring equipment to guarantee high quality cement.

“The two-line plant has a 70-km cable linking the production process from limestone crushing to the bagging of the finished products.

“We have abundant raw materials on ground and we have three alternative power sources and two stores capable of storing half a million tonnes of cement,” Dangote said.

He urged the minister to help in the formulation of policies that would aid local producers to be competitive in theinternational market.

Dangote assured the minister that his organisation would soon move into production of sugar to meet local demand.

The Special Adviser to the Dangote Group President, Mr Joseph Makoju, called on the government to address the infrastructural decay facing the country. (NAN)

  • E CLEAR SAY WE NO WANT CEMENT FOR NIGERIA. DANGOTE AND CEMENT MONOPOLY.TODAY NA FACTORY GIST,TOMORROW NA IMPORTATION GIST,NEXT TOMORROW NA FACTORY GIST. JUST BUILD UR MUMU FACTORY FINISHED,THEN MAKE U ALLOW THE BETTER IGBOS TO IMPORT CEMENT AND RE-BAG AM FOR THE NEXT 20YEARS AS YOU HAVE DONE ALL THESE YEARS.
  • Its really quiet concerning when people criticize eminent Nigerians such as Mallam Dangote instead of praising and applauding them for their visible achievements.
Granted Mallam Dangote has used government patronage to get to where he is today. Who wouldn't if such opportunity comes his/her way. The man has moved mountains for God sake, he has built mind blowing industries in a short space of time despite all the obstacles and challenges within the Nigerian business environment.

For once we have a Nigerian who is prepared to put his money where is mouth is, instead of salting it away in foreign lands. Yet people are vilifying him just for doing this. Nawa o! If we had 10 Dangotes in this country Nigeria will surely be a better place. People are mentioning the likes of Mr Ibeto etc. These guys never produced anything, all they did was obtain import licenses, buy cement from any part of the world, rebag it and sell it to Nigerians end off. Hardly rocket science!!

We need to stop being an import dependent nation, heavy industries are require to provide much needed jobs to Nigerians, diversify our economy and generate much needed foreign exchange for the country apart from black gold, which to be honest has been a cause on the nation since it was found in 1956!! That is how the chinese for example got to where they are today. They created heavy industries.

Either we believe it or not, Nigeria will definitely achieve self sufficiency in the manufacturing of cement in a very short space of time. You need to go on ground and see these cement factories with your own eyes, then you will understand where i am coming from. The new state of the art plants at Ibese , the Lafarge plant at Ewekoro and a whole host of others are just ready to fill the void that the Nigerian government has never been able to fill since we got our so called Independence.

Finally with the great strides achieved in the production of cement, what we should be clamouring for is that we have strong government regulations in place to ensure that the prices of cement are affordable to the common man. However i am sure this will happen over time, via the laws of demands and supply. We have seen it in the telecoms industry, the same will surely apply in the cement industry.

Haters, lets us celebrate progress not condemn it, Rome was certainly not built in a day! Mallam Dangote and other forward thinking Nigerians, i salute you all, may father Lord continue to bless you all in your quest to move Nigeria forward.

we should give all of these ministers and the president and his vice a certificate of merit. They all deserve to be recognized for their ability to continue to underestimate the intelligence of the Nigerian public. However, do we blame these fools? What Nigerians need to do is wake up tomorrow and confront these useless governments...from the federal to state to local. We demand all of them step down. Like the people of Tunisia did and Egypt. Look back and see what the Libyans are doing and going through. Take a look at Syria, how many of their citizens are willing to die so that the rest of them and future generation will have a better life. How many Nigerians are willing to do same? I doubt if any, because we are a bunch or cowards. We love life more than life itself. Any serious group can take on the establishment, called the government. A small group like Boko Haram, have literarily shot down a whole state. The Niger Delta resistance proved that demands and resistance could get somewhere. What it will take is all Nigerians to stand up and demand an effective representation. What is the meaning of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The word Republic translates to a government of full representation. Since the people we elected or better yet stole the election aren't there to represent you and I, what do we do? I want you all to think about it. This is the Postman From USA. I am new to this forum, but I would love some feed back. Hopefully, we can all put heads together and save the country. Peace out***The Postman
  • What are you doing in the USA? cleaning toilets and gutters and waiting for somebody to fight for you. If want revolution in naija come back home and start it yourself.
  • To people of like minds, Dangote is as guilty as Aninii the thief. Aganga too is a man whose mouth suffers from perrenial diarhoea. Dangote, what have you done for your people in the North who wallow in lack of education? Little wonder why some people are saying that Western education is evil, yet they send their children to school behind, drink beer in secrecy, sleep with other people's wives! Dangote, meet me at the ciga joint
  • story
  • WELL IF DANGOTE WHO IS A 'TORN IN NIGERIA'S FLESH' IS A SUCCESS STORY THEN WE GOT A LONG WAY, HOW DO U CALL AN OUTRIGHT EXPLOITATIVE CAPITALIST A SUCCESS STORY? WHERE ARE THE IBETOS, NKALAGWU CEMENTS AND ALL THAT? THEY ALL WENT GROUNDED BECAUSE OF DANGOTE'S MANIPULATION WITHIN THE CORRIDORS OF POWERS TO BE RIGHT FROM IBB'S TENURE UNTIL NOW...WELL, 99 DAYS FOR THE THIEVES ONE DAY IS FOR THE TRUE OWNER OF THE HOUSE...ONLY THE WISE PERSON WILL KNOW WHAT I MEAN...
    MAKE I GO DRINK BEER
  • That is business for you...the Ibetos and Nkalagus were just foolish...just as the Nokia's and Motorola's are today. Will you blame Apple and Blackberry for pushing them out the market by manipulation within the corridors of power?
