Dangote himself has said that his big break came when he transformed himself from a trader into a manufacturer. That should be a lesson to Nigerians that only know how to buy and sell but not produce anything. They will complain of infrastructure but all the manufacturing in Nigeria is done by the Indians, Lebanese, Chinese and Western Multinationals and yet we sit and watch them thrive and despoil us in our land.

Dangote took the bull by the Horns and started producing and is even exporting all his goods and all we do is HATE!! Go figure.

If only we realize that being an import dependent nation is a recipe for poverty and unemployment (due to capital flight). Nigerians prefer to give foreigners jobs by bringing in foreign goods and services (28 Billion dollar imports in 2010) instead of producing in Naija and keep the money in the country. The recipe for long term wealth is producing, not buying and selling. That is why Dangote has continued to grow wealthier irrespective of the government in power.

For those who don't know, Dangote is the biggest employer of labour in Nigeria after the Federal Government. Those who say he made his money thru government have to wonder why he has outlasted every government in Naija since the late seventies. What is he doing that the millions of other Nigerians are not doing. They are talkers while Dangote is a doer!! Smiley

Sit there while the dude continues to invest all over Africa and grow even wealthier.

If somebody is saying that dangote and adenuga are from sw and north respectively, the question should be, what is the poverty rate in their respect states of origin? How has their wealth contributed in improving the economic lives of their respective states of origin. We know how they both stole Nigeria blind during Obj tenure thru petroleun importation. We knew how Ibeto of Nnewi was sidelined and blocked by Obj to give dangote monopoly in cement importation. In ogun and kano states where dangote and adenuga come from has what is called abnormal curve in terms of economic growth, meaning that very few people are rich while too many people are very poor, infact below poverty line. Take Anambra state for instance, its one state in Nigeria with the lowest poverty rate in Nigeria, none of them without federal govt monopoly. Innoson, coscharis, Emzor, Juhel Pharm, May & Baker, Capital oil, Nestoil and so many of them, the list is long. All the above mentioned are people who made money without govt connection. That is the real wealth and not the likes of dangote and adenuga who got govt inflated and dubious contracts and bank over-draft to become richmen.

Well, I am happy for Dangote and the giant strides he has made in the Business and Manufacturing world. Though I know he is a monopolist and has deep government connections, I admire him for his business intelligence. Dangote has shown that Nigerians can compete with the Chinese, Indians and Lebanese when it comes to Manufacturing in Nigeria. Buying and Selling can make you some money, but it is Manufacturing and Producing goods and food that people can pay for that will make you really rich. What I feel Aliko Dangote needs to do now is to invest in Public infrastructure like the Railways and Power Sector. He will make more money by owning a train company or Electricity Generating Company and at the same time providing constant electricity supply to Nigerians. He will also be able to maintain his companies. Dangote, you've done well. Cheers.

Are we talking of same Dangote that his closeness to OBJ made the latter to close down IBETO's cement factory in PH so that the former who bankrolled his 1st and 2nd election can have undue advantage?

Was he not given same undue advantage in Sugar, Rice etc importation?

Are we so forgetful in this part of the world?

And who will have such advantage and not be on forbes list? . . . . . . . .Even a aboki and his malu would!

@ kalokalo , did you really post that, me I no really yap Dangote ooo. Sad Do some research and not just write what is on the surface bro,

Anyone who thinks Dangote has not benefited 99.5% from monopolistic policies must be kidding or some sort.

I had my bro working @ Customs and Excise a few years back and he used to sigh, cos there was instruction 4rm the Presidency that Dangote should not pay import duty on all his business imports for a very long period of time. Abacha instructed and it went on for a long time,

This is just one of the very many Dangote has benefited from,, we also have the stock exchange saga of price irregularities at the xpexpencef Ndidi Okere bigging up your share price while she gains at the end, We are all not Blind you know, Grin

Yes he has achieved some greatness but not without the help of the Government, Trust me on this, He his a BIG Fish no one can take on like Microsoft a few years back,

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet the Top rich guys of the world are giving back to Africa in Millions /Billion helping us to solve our very own problem Malaria,

I hope Dangote is doing his own bit, No point gaining the world and all around you is dying,

Goodluck to him and congrats as well.

The Forbes List though is highly influenced as well anyway, not really a White paper yard stick to measure wealth.

thank u broda, lest we all forget all his other competitors ony started a few years ago

have u all forgotten the indomie saga?
his best friend otedola saga?

any man or woman in dangotes postion(connections and in a third world nation as nigeria) that does not become a a billionaire in dollars value , has no iq.

south africa spent about 5 billion on their world cup, and made returns

obj spent more than that on nepa and things got worse, u know why? well reasons like these are why dangotes the richest in africa, tell me hw u supply even salt to a nation of 150 million people and u remain and ordinary miilionaire, like some one said , if his industries where he thrives were opened up, he iwill difintly not be where he is

good and congrats to the man sha at leasts he the second higest employeer of labour after the federal goverment( though he sacks at will too Grin)

How come an igbo man is not on the list ?

Very good question !!!

Let's look clinically at how Nigerian billionaires are made .

Dangote ; he was an ordinary cement and rice importer until 1987 when the head of state - ibrahim Babangida banned the importation of rice in the country and after several months he allowed Dangote to import ships loads of cement .

Ever since then Dangote has been an AGIP = any govt in power ,he was so close to abacha that his younger brother died with Abachas son in a plane crash. He was part of the people who bankrolled OBJ first term, second term , the aborted third term and yaraduas term.

OBJ rewarded him and Otedola with PH refineries at give away prices.

Mike Adenuga; he is not as rich as people think he is , he is a front man for IBB and Atiku. CIL which later metamorphosed to GLo was started with some wrongly sindicated Govt fund from PTDF running into some millions of dollars , which was ordered to be deposited in. TIB ( a failed south west bank) by Atiku , later the same money was syndicated to Glo as loan by TIB, the EFCC upon hearing this looked the other way and today TIB is a failed bank.

Ever wondered why the PHCN and refineries don't work in nigeria, then you might be in for the biggest shock of your lives.
The Nigerian Billionaires bought over all the downstream petroleum companies Con oil, MRS, AP, these companies to stay afloat must import fuel in to the country and for the fuel to sell people must use generators and for people to use generators then the PHCN must not work.

Questions I have Nigerians

1 how come during OBJ's reign no serious attempt was made to put PHCN into good operation despite the fact that the Bola Ige (who died mysteriously planned as far back as 2001 to put NEPA in shape.

2 how come the refineries never worked in OBJ's tenure instead the petrol pump price increased from 70k to =N= 55

3 how come all the overnite billionaires: Dangote, Otedola,Jimoh ibrahim,Adenuga made their billions during OBJ's tenure

Is someone still reading ?

Hmmm u seem to be very near the truth of the matter,
It was true that these guys you mentioned all had their Big Break during IBB Time
Especially Dangote & Adenuga.

Dangote was given exclusive rights on importation of specific items
and Adenuga was an Agent for IBB in the "Oil-Cabal".

Dangote is already investing in infrastructure in Nigeria. For example, for his cement company, he builds his own power plants, dams, pipelines, jetties, roads and is now constructing a railroad to link Obajana to the sea (Warri) so as to position his cement for exports when its capacity exceed local demand by June of 2011.

The infrastructure that he invests in gives his companies a strategic competitive advantage that his competitors cannot match. He is a man with foresight!!!!!

It WAS Lafarge and NOT Dangote that petitioned Obasanjo about Ibeto. The policy was that only importers with evidence of cement backward integration would be allowed to import and Ibeto was not moving towards manufacturing. I

It was the same policy that forced Dangote to jettison importation for local cement manufacturing. Isn't it interesting that after all the noise Ibeto made about breaking Dangote's( imaginary) monopoly in cement, we have not heard anything about him again.

Four years after Yaradua restored his license to import, Ibeto still has not invested a kobo in local cement manufacturing while all others in the industry are expanding and building new plants in compliance with the backward integration policy in cement.

Again, Ibeto is just symptomatic of Nigerian businessmen that prefer to import (buying and selling) for decades with no interest in producing anything!!
