BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has charged the chairman and members of the committee on Small, Medium Scale Industries, to inspire small scale business into bigger ventures.

Inaugurating the committee yesterday at Government House, Benin City, Governor Oshiomhole said sinceGovernment alone cannot provide the much needed employment, the private sector must be encouraged to complement it in achieving the feat.

The governor observed that one of the greatest challenges faced by government today, was how to focus on ways to encourage the people to be self-employed by setting up their own small business and access capital to grow such business.

He added that it was also the concern of government to ensuring that those small businesses grow to become medium scale businesses.

“Our hope as a government is that your committee will assist with ideas that will help to mobilise small and medium scale business, bring them together so that they can have a voice and government can now talk to them and see how we can assist each other because our dream as a government is to strengthen the economy of our state”, Comrade Oshiomhole stated.

The governor remarked that providing the basic infrastructural facilities was important, but more important “is how we can support our citizens to set up themselves and become employers when they become successful”.

While congratulating members of the committee for having been selected, he noted that their choice wasbased on their individual capacity to think on how one can set up something from a modest level and grow same to become something bigger.

The governor pointed to great entrepreneurs like Alhaji Aliko Dangote who began from small scale business to become the richest man in Africa.

He, therefore expressed the hope that the government through the efforts of the committee will be able to support the people to become self-employed.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Osamede Adun, thanked the state government for the appointment.

He said “the committee will play a vital role in complementing the efforts of the state governor in developingthe state. Let me assure the governor what we will not betray the confidence reposed in us”.

The seven-member committee has as its members, Messrs Charles Nehizena, Collinus Adosu and Tony Iyoha.

Others are Alice Amahia, Eghe Osarobo and Vincent Ekpe.
