According to Forbes.com World’s Billionaires list, Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote has a networth of $13.8billion as of March 2011, ranking him 51st in the world and number 1 in Africa. This is the first time Dangote has been ranked as Africa's richest individual.

The 53-yr old businessman’s fortune surged 557% in the past year, making him the world'sbiggest gainer in percentage terms.

The listing of his company, Dangote Cement, on the Nigerian Stock Exchange served as a catalyst. His company’s listing now accounts for a quarter of the market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Dangote Flour, Dangote Sugar and national Salt, his other companies also listed on the exchange, means that he accounts for close to 35 per cent of the total market capitalisation.

Dangote began his career as a commodities trader, subsequently building his Dangote Group into a conglomerate with interests in sugar, flour milling, salt processing, cement manufacturing, textiles, oil & gas, and real estate.

I wish we had more Aliko Dangote's! Congratulations!!

Posted by ochlab on Mar 10 2011

Why wont he be the richest man in Africa when through government machinery he creates monopoly through which he alone can do certain things in Nigeria? Time will tell the worth of his wealth.

Posted by Chhief Okeke (Moscow, RF) on Mar 10 2011

OBJ is worth much more!!!

Posted by Ekanem on Mar 10 2011

@ Ochlab, is he the only one? Why don't you ask yourself what is he doing that others who have similar opportunities are not doing. I am yet to hear of Dangote winning a govt contract, except policies that will legally protect his billions of investment in manufacturing from others who do not believe in the backward integration policy of the govt (they just want to import, and nothing else). Even the oil companies are withholding investment until the PIB is passed.

Posted by fredujam on Mar 10 2011

I totally agree with your comments, Mr Ochlab.

Any responsible government will protect the interest of the largest private sector employer in its domain. Dangote is also Africa's largest manufacturer of cement. Kudos Aliko, keep it up. @Cchlab what's your contribution to Nigeria/Africa..taxes, employer?

Whoa! That's impressive! Really impressive! But er..., what's he giving back to the society? If Zuckerberg and Gates and even the acclaimed tight-fisted Buffet can leave their countries and come to Asia and Africa so they can give back to the society, what're you doing? But all the same, you're an inspiration.

it does matter one jot what favours if any that mr dangote has had over the years,he has created employment and economic development both in nigeria and abroad.if we had 20 dangotes imagine what are economy will look like.if only most of our youth will aim to be mini dangotes than corrupt politicians we would be miles better.more power to his elbow.same goes for adenuga, the owners of media houses the king of computers in nigeria, the lady with the fried chicken outfit.let us celebrate hard work and enterprise.it cannot be bad news all the time.if we have more transparency we will soar.we have the market,we have the enterprise and in some cases there is the drive.there are thousands of nigerians that blown the chance that dangote took.good on him.

Posted by bloody fool on Mar 10 2011

Mr. or Chief Dangote is making billions of dollars--and, yes, off govt--while his numerous trailers are wrecking havoc daily on our roads. By the sheer volume of his vast trade, he should by now have embraced rail transport for the distribution of his products to ease the heavy loss of lives and properties his companies' trailers always cause. Well done to him!

Dangote is blessed by GOD to be rich,it's not by his wisdom or hardwork alone.and it could be anyone else, he is better than those people in our government that only steal our money and have nothing to show for.but he should learn to give out to the less privilegded ones more especially in other african countries.one day my name shall sound even more than that of DANGOTE

@oga The entrepreneur's mindset is different from that of the thief. While part of the attributes of the former includes, boldness, courage, wealth creation and conquering new frontiers. The former latter on the other hand is driven by fear, greed lack of depth and belief in their abilities. Getting rid of a stealing leadership is our collective responsibility as we go to polls in the next couple of weeks.

I wish i could be the only distributor of sachet water (pure water)in Nigeria. And in the next 10 years i will be the richest man in the world. Just try me.Its no big Deal if Dangote is the richest man in Africa now......because he was the sole importer of rice to Nigeria for many years...

Posted by bloody fool on Mar 10 2011

So Mr. Dangote's net worth now should translate into about half of Nigeria GDP. Anyway, he is already part of the good mafia. Moreso, tell him to pay his taxes to govt(s) and his tithe, after the Original one has satisfactorily been settled, to me!

@paquito bites how can you have 20 Dangote's? Who told you they like competition? Go and ask Ibeto his experience. These are rent seekers not entrepreneurs. They thrive by manipulating state policies in their favour. Yes his wealth has increased by over 57% in a year while more and more Nigerians are heading into poverty within the same period. Do you see the injustice in this. What rubbish contribution. Who told you all investments contribute positively to economic development. I think you should take studies in development economics.

Richer at the expense of Nigerians dying through his trailer accidents, atleast I still remember the one that claim over 40 lives on Lagos-Ibadan. No wonder he is raisng money for PDP to win more contracts and monopolise cements, sugar and flour. When we bought his stocks,he told us,he wanted to share his wealth with Nigerians, well, tell me how much he has donated to philantrophic bodies? As long as we have this type of Nigerian system Dangote, where kick in,back kick is the norm, dangote will be hitting $20B in 2012. I missed M.K.O Abiola- the man of the people.

Dangote has make himself to be used by Almighty Allah, by practising what he is inspired to do, and always invest the gain to establish more productive companies, for the benefit of we the masses! May he continue to grow higher and do grant good health and long life to enjoy the fruit of his labour.

Posted by Ogbunigwe on Mar 11 2011

the northern military and political machinery created dangote, especially under abacha. once upon a time, dangote was the only human being who could import rice and other essential commodities at a time the masses were most hungry. those who could have beatten him hands down were either denied such monopolistic privileges, or were dealt with using the instruments of state or both. the only reason dangote is successful today is bc he is a fulani man. be that as it may, dangote has reached out to all nigerians irrespective of cultural or geographical grouping, thru employment opportunities and, thus, deserves credit for that.

Posted by Mallamugun on Mar 11 2011

Why cant we learn to appreciate our own? Instead of passing caustic comments on Dangote which I see as pure envy, he should be encouraged to do more for the society just like Bill Gates of this world.

Posted by Ebuka Ekwueme[texas] on Mar 11 2011

Yes!government may have had a hand in fast tracking the growth and success of his business and the incredulous profit surge, but he his not sitting down and sipping maitai all day,he works very hard and i believe to some degree he deserves the success. The life of the very rich is not something everyone has the guts and willpower to live,so i give him kudos.Remember he was not the only one favoured by government and no matter the amount of money you give a lazy and weak minded person,it will all come to not.

This guy is doing the right thing and yet some are complianing. You can see where his investment are, noting to hide. If you can work hard please do and you will get there. Not when you buy cars and build houses to show off. Invest, take the risk and you will make it too. Some fool mentioned loans, yes you need to owe to be rich.

For those complaining, Carlos Slim has a virtual monopoly in Mexico in certain areas of their economy. Dangote is productive. WE ALL SEE with our eyes what he does. He might not be perfect, but he is certainly worthy of emulation. If we had a few more like him in Nigeria, paying attention to the private sector, we would be much closer to economic success we seek. Alhaji Dangote CONGRATS!

Posted by Ogbunigwe on Mar 11 2011

dangote is worth only $14b. with obj's $27.3b, ibb's $21.9b, tinubu's $5.1b, atiku's $10.6b, abacha family's $18.4b, yar adua's $3.1b, abdulsallam's $17.56b, buhari's $4.9b, uzor kalu's $0.920b($0.83b b4 gov) etc etc, you can see dangote's not even the richest in naija. he is the richest among those with verifiable means of income.

Hardwork is the key to success, so your success as Africa richest man is a great challenge to the scrupulous politicians who embezzled public funds and keep it in european banks.

Posted by paquito bites on Mar 11 2011

@ naija man.why shake the bee hive to get the queen?.i am an economist and my basic 101 course tells me that part of enterprise in an economy;either the free market, which is mostly theory,or the monopolistic type, which is more the norm, creates jobs in an economy.to use the term "rent seekers" in the case of dangote is pure folly.i grant you your opinion but it is flawed.this is a perjorative term to express a dislike for the entrepreneurial spirit.surely if we juxtapose the dangote contribution with the ibori one things will be brought into sharp focus.the propensity to steal,if checked would have given us a huge propensity to consume as a nation which would have resulted in a multiplier effect that would have fired the economy.sheer greed and wickedness has seen to it that this is mere conjecture.my friend,it would have been a reality if not for the thieving bastards, and dangote is certainly not one of those.i suggest you put that in your economic development pipe and smoke it.good morning.

Dangote's success and wealth shows why the government should completely get out of running businesses in Nigeria. Do you think any of the businesses run by Dangote would have made a kobo in profit if they were run by government "parastatals"? I have always believed that the key to Nigeria's development is for the government to create an enabling environment for businesses to grow and thrive and to fund the country's infrastructure deficit through Public Private Partnerships with the private sector. Why do we Nigerians like to complicate the simplest things?

I believe that if GLO, Consolidated Petroleum, ETB and his other companies' shares are opened to the public, Forbes will be in a better position to value the net worth of Dr. Mike Adenuga, which many of us believe is not too far inferior to Dangote's. Over to you, Mike!

As splendid and commendable as this is, its what you give back to society that determines the worth of your wealth. The greatest example of wealth demonstrated is in the One who gives. Except perhaps am not well informed about how you do what you do, if your not yet doing it, you should start soon.

The evidence of wisdom is riches and wealth even in the bible. The wise is rich at the expence of the fool not the poor but the foolish man said it is luck. More grace to your elbow Aliko Dangote.

People say Dangote use government influence to favour his business, but in marketing world we call that: ' High Power Marketing". Why should he not use it as a strategy. Ask the cotton farmers in America about their lobby on government subsidy on farming, you will be amazed of your findings. When it comes to international achievement let's remove the parochial view call 'tribe' and religion. we are all Nigerians. Nigerians have that collective obligation to develop their immediate environment for the benefit and favour of generation yet unborn. Let's not be like our prodigal brothers, fathers, and sons who looted our treasury blind only to save it in foreign lands who further use that wealth to neo-colonize us. I am proud to be one of you Dangote.

Posted by Augustine Onwukwe Athens/Greece on Mar 14 2011

As a Nigerian i am proud of Dangote achievement despite the fact that obj government gave him a monopoly right to sale cement/sugar e.t.c for six years in a country of over 150 million people, yet we haven't seen or hear any lawsuit against the federal government for damages. Funny things do happen in Nigeria. As Dangote has successfully join the billionaire dud's in the world, let him also emulate people like Bill Gate that believe in giving back to the society that has giving so much to them!

Wateva d critics say now doesnt really matter, what matters is dat he is a MADE man nd nobody can do anythin about it...bt i pray dat he got d money in a clean way nd he spends it d right way cos on d day of al-qiyama he will account 4 every penny earned.....may ALLAH grant us mercy, forgiveness nd al-jana firduas.....AMEEN.

This is great for Nigeria and indeed Africa.Dangote started commercial cement trading with just N60,000or equivalent to $388USD, borrowed funds from and uncle some years back in the 70's. Today, he has become the richest African in the same business. This shows that if as many Africans can be focused, committed and adopt the basic business rules of persistence, we can with small capital create big dreams. My advice for every one to start thinking business and starting small.

Despite the advantages Dangote might have had in terms of monopoly granted given to him by a previous government we must still salute his business acumen and his selfless nature. After-all many others have had the same opportunity in Nigerian and have done nothing more often than not they engage in the extravagant display of personal wealth. To his credit Dangote has taken that monopolistic advantage and used it to benefit not only himself but also Nigerians with provision of employment through his various industries. Kudos to you sir!!

Posted by david ekene on Apr 12 2011

i think there's a mistake somewhere, DAN is more than being the richest in afirca. he has all it takes to be the richest black man on earth. but i want him to know that he still need to do more, and face the challenges that surrounds the richess like GATE. development is not by government alone, it is a collective effort. now the country has made him rich, he should think of what to do for the govt and individuals as well, for compensating him through buying of his products. meanwhile i expect more from him like building motor car or motor bike plant that can produce all this in nigeria just like INNOSON. I wish you the best while you pray for me to be like you. GOD BLESS YOU, BLESS ANYONE THAT BLESS YOU AND ABOVE all BLESS NIGERIA. I AM PROUD TO BE A NIGERIAN

He has created billions of employment 2 d Nation,so he has affected billion of Nigerians if not Africans..

God punish them all. Aliko, keep on investing, you are comming to the top three in the next few years. you are Welthy and its transparent! Any government policy that that can influnce your geting to the top three in the world, influnce and invest in it and better the lot of africans. RIDE ON!.

Our Refineries, Ajaokuta steel, Alaja steel, Nafcon, Textiles, Nitel, Cement companies etc, all these companies are dead, instead of our government to revive them they give order to people like this for importation. Imagine Nigerian importing finished petroleom product like fuel what a shame.
