Alhaji Aliko Dangote emerged the 334th richest man in the world based on the recently released 2008 Forbes Magazine list of richest men in the world, making him the richest black person. A Nigerian, he hit the jackpot when his sugar-production company listed on the Nigerian stock exchange last year.

Meanwhile, proposed initial public offerings of his flour and cement companies have stalled. Began career as trader at 21 with loan from his uncle; built his Dangote Groupinto conglomerate with interests in sugar, flour milling, salt processing, cement manufacturing, textiles, real estate, haulage and oil and gas. Closely linked to Nigeria’s former president Olusegun Obasanjo. His wealth is estimated at $3.3 billion.

The other black man on the list is Patrice Mosepe (#503) from South Africa with a net worth of $2.4 billion.

i am not surprise. the hand of the dilligent shall bear rule. also, the law of giving is working for him. the same way it is working for the likes of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett

It is amazing that the same europe and specifically the British that plundered Zimbawe for over a century, seized her lands for her kith sand kins of less than five percent of the population can today come and talk of democracy in Zi mbabwe going astray. More worrisome are some Africans who have joined in the campaign of calumny against President Mugabe. Let it be known worldwilde that Mugabe stands out clearly out of the mentally deranged african leaders for fighting against cumulative injustice of over a century wrought on Zimbabwe and recently renewed with vigor

I want to believe that Aliko Dangote is the richest Nigerian and blackman. His wealth is transparent and everybody can see. Those other Nigerians or blackmen who feel that they are richer than Dangote should come out and prove their wealth.

  6. orji on May 18th, 2008 4:50 pm

in all ramification dangote is not as rich as ex-president of nigeria obasanjo.
so you guys need more research cos there there many black africans that are stupindiously rich

Keep the flag flying my big brother!!! I’m proud of your achievement! Atleast the world for a change has seen that something good can still come out of Nigeria!!! May Almighty God continue to bless and guide your steps Alhaji Dangote!!! We are waiting for you in South Africa to exploit the huge opportunities there too!!!!

  8. Layi Oladapo on June 24th, 2008 5:08 am

Bewaji, Aliko may not be the richest Nigerian, but so far his wealth is the only one that is traceable and could be accounted for. Do you want to add some crooks to the list of these hardworking entrepreneurs, who have earned their monies the old fashioned way? We need more investors like Dangote in Nigeria. This at least will create jobs in the country rather than stacking the loots in foreign banks, and making other countries rich. Thank you Aliko, keep up the good job.

Keep the flag flying my big brother!!! I’m proud of your achievement.
His wealth is transparent and everybody can testify to. Those other Nigerians or blackmen who feel that they are richer than Dangote should come out and prove their wealth. Alhaji aliko Dangote has created more jobs for nigerians may the Almighty God continue to blees him o!!! Amen

  10. nat on July 21st, 2008 11:33 am

well the fact remains that for we all know alico dangote business is transparent enough to know if he is the richest blackman or not interms of business like yes he is the richest in nigeria and as it goes is the richest blackman in the world keep it up my man.

  11. gab on July 27th, 2008 6:34 pm

    Hi
although Dangote appears to be transparent now. But is beginnings and how he made is money have been very unscrupulous.

My point his how would Dangote deal with competition?
How much of a strangle/monopoly hold has he got?
How many similar competitors has he squashed?

Here in britain BT (British Telecom) have been stripped of all there stranglehold/monopoly in the telecoms market hence more brands and competitor which has led to more choices and cheaper goods/services. My point is if one of us here had the investment to run head to toe with Dangote, How long would you and I last in Nigera? Hw would Dangote deal with a threat like that?

  12. sefas on July 30th, 2008 11:23 am

it is true some nigerians are richer than dangote but can they prove their source?

  13. EKENE RAHPAEL on July 31st, 2008 10:51 pm

well is true that he started under the influence of political will
giving him chance to excel but at least he is not a fool he still
spend the monopoly earning money and become the richest black man.I am on his side cos he invested and created more jobs in my home country. His wealth is now transparent. i nominate him. you there if you think you are richer invest i your country and not dumping money outside nigerian bank. money outside are not the right path to follow invest and join the queing .bravo

  14. rosina tagoe ghana on August 1st, 2008 2:48 pm

    Hi Aliko,

I think we need these kind of men in Africa not mediocrates. Some think Africans lack the heart of lions and for that matter we are content with whatever we get. there is nothing like big competitors when your strategies are unique.Gab, dont think Africans cant get where others are. We are capable and so watch out for the might Africans.

  15. OKOBI Francis on August 7th, 2008 6:48 pm

Dangote is undoubtedly the richest man in Nigeria and as well as the richest blackman in the world. if anybody has contrary view to this, then they should declare their assets so that they can be assessed. thumbs up for Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Nigerians are proud of your landmark achievements.

Thanks for this lovely ideas of yours . I got nothing to say about the nigerian government , only God can judge everyone for what they have done because , its God that owns the land. We are all just creatures on the land .But my praises goes to these two wondeful men [nigerians] that have so much helped many nigerians in the world of employment. I need to awake the knowledge of all nigerians to this , im talking of of these two people to be praised in our economy . Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Mr Mike Adenuga. These two men have given thousands of lives in nigerian a new touch of life . So many nigerians that should have been suffering for job illness today could live a better life being engaged in one feild of job or the other in their companies all over the nation. I love these men for they do not fail in God’s purpose in their existence. I pray to be a man like you both someday in this country.

Well, all i can say for now is that Alhaji Alico Dangote is stinkingly rich, no doubt about it. I was made to understand that he started his business with the 500,000Naira he inherited from his grandfather. If that is the case, then he is indeed a real business man. I long to go beyond his financial height some days.

  19. olagunju olamide on September 6th, 2008 7:31 pm

Anyone can be richer than dangote,it”s a matter of focus and hard work. Though i made him my model, but i believe i will be richer than him. My Quote ‘IF YOU NEED SMALL MONEY,YOU USED YOUR HAND,IF YOU NEED BIG MONEY,YOU USED YOUR HEAD. But you don’t need to be a frudster to be rich.

  20. Tayo Ladega on September 9th, 2008 7:34 am

Kudos to Dangote for a job well done, he is unlike the pen robber politicians we have as our leaders who are hell bent on destrying Gods gift to Nigeria,at least he has proven to the world at large the something good can still come out of this great cuntry. I am proud to be a Nigerian. May Almighty Allah in His infinity mercy continue to protect & guide you from the evil ones in this country. Tayo Ladega - 08080386958.

  21. Emeka on September 11th, 2008 10:48 am

I like that people are debating this and the truth should be told. If they say that Dangote is the richest man in Nigeria I do believe as his money or wealth can be seen to be gotten transparently on like our so called robbers Ibb and Obj who’s wealth was gotten from the loot of our treasury without thinking of the people who owns it. They do not have anything left in their brains to work and do not think they can despite attending one of the best schools in Nigeria. (NDA). They should please take a toe from Dangote who borrowed money from his uncle to start his empire.

    Food for thought.

  22. Okorie Sunday O. on September 12th, 2008 2:38 pm

The hammer matter should not be based on declaring Alhaji Alico Dangote as one of the world richest men only, but questions on what he has done for his country should be our apple of discuss. No matter how wealthy a man is, if he has not embarked on one capital project or the other toward his country development, then the impact of his wealth is of no value to his immediate country. It does not depend only on job creation alone, which he has done to some extent. Its time we advice Alhaji Alico Dangote to quit the struggle of being rated as the no1 man, in terms of wealth, and focus his philantropic gesture on the development of his country. Bill Gate will never be forgotten in his for numerous philantropic activities in his country. Why can’t we encourage people like him to check poverty excess in our Country Nigeria, by developing capital projects that will be felt by mostly the poor masses. Nigeria has not enjoyed any form of “basic amenities” since independence. Our leaders only distribute “basic sufferings”,which is only felt by the poor masses. People keep on dying day by day not because they’ve choose suicide but as a consequence of the evil reflections of our leaders’ actions. What is the benefit of our wealth when it does not have strong and direct impact on our immediate environment and most especially those living around us? Lets reason together!

I believe that this is just the begining and that a black man one day will become the richest man in the world,i’m proud of him he should keep it up, someday, somehow, you will be among the first 10th richest men in the world.I pray to be a man like you someday in this country.

  26. Kolajo Adewumi on October 9th, 2008 8:30 am

The fact is Dangote is undoubtedly the richest Nigerian.
He’s been rolling off large amounts for years and there’s honestly been no other Nigerian who’s made as much money in as many years.
Besides, Nigerians have got this mentality that illegal money can reel off high profits. Any one who really applies his mind will realise that huge sums of money with no root will definetely have investment issues. That’s why all the illegitimate people are always looking for a front to launder their money through.
Kudos to Dangote. The truth is we can all get rich if we apply ourselves. But it takes a little more to get that rich. Let’s hope his path is truly straight. No doubt, he’s blessed!

  27. Amila Gbenga on October 15th, 2008 11:35 pm

Aliko Dangote is a man that has been saving Nigeria economy from a long time,he affects our labour markets and our labour force positively by providing millions of jobs either directly or indirectly for nigeria citizens,he invested virtually in every sectors of nigeria economy thereby bringing economical development to our nation at a faster rate than when compared to the different dead policies of our failed government, thank God we have somebody like him who can invest his money in an unsecured economy.I don’t want to know if Aliko legimately acquired his fortune or not,if he has a political influence or not but all i know is that he has offer most to the country than what he takes from it.We need the likes of Mike Adenuga,Femi Otedola,Aliko Dangote who sincerely have the love of the country at hearts.I must tell you that for political reasons those who steal Nigeria money will not invest it here, come to think of it,what ‘ll happen to our common wealth that has been converted by OBJ if he die today?.

  28. Ogonna chukwudifu obi on October 18th, 2008 11:17 pm

Is true, Dangote is rich but we know is as a result of the close relationship he had with the former president, so many other prominent business men like Dangote was short down, we shouldn’t forget that, people like Ibeto from Anambara state. Also there are many other men ten times richer than Dangote here in Nigeria.

  29. Dela on October 23rd, 2008 6:46 pm

I consider the ratings of the richest people in the world by Forbes similar propaganda forums as aimed at misinforming people and painting pictures that are grossly misleading.

I can remember reading an interview of Alhaji Dangote challenging the claim by forbes that oprah was the richest black person and the only black billionaire. All of a sudden there are several black billionaires. If the good Alhaji had not gotten fed-up of the misinformation, perhaps Oprah would still be the only black billionaire.

Since they cannot keep all blacks out of the billionaire club, perhaps they will now down grade their wealth. I got news for you people, you still got in t wrong with how much the black billionaires have to their credit or is that the new game?

If you must tell us who has what, then do your home work and do tell us the truth so we continue to take what you say seriously.

I believe in the likes of Dangote. I have a friend that did his youth service in kano and was so impressed with the size of Dangote’s empire that it spurred him to go into the commodities business,he reels out Dangotes profile like he was there when everything happened. My friend Chuks is worth over A HUNDRED MILLION NAIRA just 3 years after youth service. My point is this, Dangote has inspired many Nigerians to take their destiny in their hands and believe in the true meaning of hardwork and dignity in labour,We need more of his kind.

He is glaringly a Man worth emulating! GOD Almighty will continue to bless him & his generation yet unborn. Thanks

Kudos to my man! Not that He is rich only, but He is a God sent man. He has invested in his country, thereby creating jobs for his people: unlike those who prefare to invest outside Nigeria while Nigerians are seeking for jobs, dying of hunger and poverty.

Will I ever meet him ‘Dangote”? It will be a miracle, a day of the lord, a remarkable day

Carry Go my man, you are highly blessed.

i love Dangote bcos he’s a v.reasonable human being and a Man that fear GOD and respect man.i want to say that other leader should emulate his attitude and invest in their country.i have traved the world, there is no place like home.i’m presently residing in london & i have lived in some european for a while and i believe its only ‘failure’ invet his money abroad because nomatter what you have abroad may goin a twikle of an eye especially when you growing v.fast than the citizen of that country you reside.they will like to fustrate your effort and see you falling and relocate back to your country especially when you are blackman like me.i’m relocating v.soon back to country, although i have my business running in my country only here for experience and that’s it.kudos to Aliko dangote. He will be rich 4everlike his uncle dantata.LETS BUILD NIGERIA TOGETHER NOW!!!.GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

Speaking of riches and wealth, the world says, “CAN ANYTHING GOOD COME OUT OF NIGERIA” and i say “THE RICHEST BLACKMAN IN AFRICA COMES FROM NIGERIA” Man, i am very proud to be a Blackman. Because BLACK signifies WEALTH and UNIQUENESS. I am hoping for a day to shake hands with you, Alhaji, i am proud of you. I look forward to meeting you someday.

To borrow money is part of busines life!Dangote did nothing wrong by borrowing money. His business ventures arent 419 but tangible projects.Dangote is a great man!

  70. Maknun Alli-Oluwafuyi on October 12th, 2009 12:02 pm

Dangote’s not d richest man in Nigeria….in actual fact he is not amongst d top 10 richest men…..talkin about his money been transparent, how sure r u???….I used 2 envy him not until recently, his money cannot be said 2 be entirely transparent. Because he has helped in installing our corrupt leaders by sponsoring campaigns and donating billions of naira towards the construction of the corruption head-quarters PDP, successive governments have implemented policies which would only favour the likes of dangote. Okay fine, he is strictly a business man and if he can influence government policies no problems - but what tangible things has he returned back to the society, how many foundations does he sponsor?how many schools, hospitals, houses for the destitutes has he constructed?how many bills that would affect the common man has he sponsored in the house?the recent feud between him and otedola just shows that these men are out there to accumulate wealth and flaunt it - they’ll go to banks to collect loans without collaterals - a common man would not be given a N100,000 loan in any bank without him using his land as a collateral, yet we celebrate and praise these men. I’m not been judgemental here and i’m not trying to say he hasn’t tried. God knows best!

  71. Akepel VICTOR on October 12th, 2009 12:10 pm

If you say Aliko Dangote is the richest blackman in the world yes you may be right, how do you rate a rich man is it by all his has including his debts? or a man who has 1 million naira and owes the bank 500k and the man who has total 700k without oweing any bank or persons so make a proper reserch i hail Aliko Dangote because he has lowed the rate of unemployment kudos to him stay BLESSED an archiver

Alh. Dangote is a man I respect so much, one striking feature about him is that despite his wealth, he is humble and kind hearted. I think he should be re-rated after he must have paid all his debt, till then we can know if his is still the richest black man.
    Aliko, U are no doubt a gr8 entrepnuer, I respect U.
    Uzo, Owerri.

  75. suraj on November 1st, 2009 1:11 pm

Alh.Dangote, is a rich man in all ramifications-NIGERIAN MEASUREMENT, but lets step back to look at it from my point of view, a rich man in Nigeria is one who has a house in any choice area of any state, able to run his/her generator thru out the time when PHCN disappoints, has an armed escort and care’s less for traffic rules and not intimidated by summons or Official rulings from courts or FEC meetings.
If you want to ask for a Forbes Nigerian version, you will need to sign a non disclosure agreement from a bablawo 1st,then have clearance from the EFCC and ICPC, we have RICH men in NIGERIA plenty, by Nigerian standards, but Alh stand’s out for him being internationally measured not by Nigerian standards.Traceable funds, and non participation in Government Politics, and outstanding debts his company would owe, which makes sense, cos he had to borrow money for most projects to start, honestly, he has being stead fast in archiving his non participation in politics, that his aim, was simple, i cant stand criticism for reporters, cant stand being told what to do and where to go,how to go there and why, He is a business man to the core…CONGRATULATIONS SIR…

To know that a black man, precisely a Nigerian can still be regarded with so much regard basically coz of ‘hard work’ brings to mind the fact that we (blacks) can attain the same great heights as our counterparts anywhere else. we’re so proud of u, Dangote

Dangote has proved to the world that Nigeria is also a good place for investment. But my advice to Dangote is to also set up charity organisation like Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation in order to help the less priviledge, the poor and the drop-out of school. I think this will be nice.

Yes, we all know dat dangote is among d richest men in d world & all he has done 4 his country but let dis honor not distract him. There’s a proverb dat say if u praise a man too much u’re praising him to death.

bravo aliko dangote,we are very proud of you.

  92. Joel Oyeniyi, Lagos on March 15th, 2010 9:34 am

Despite the fact that Dangote is the richest black man, yet he is the 334th person in the world, that is to say we still have a long way to go, there is nothing to celebrate here. The Youth Corps who served in his group of companies complain bitterly on how he treats them poorly.

What benefit is his wealth to Nigerians, when his group of companies still uses diesel to power their Generator Sets, what benefit is his wealth? when his trailers keep having accidents everyday as a result of bad roads, what benefit is his wealth? when his closest brothers are dying of hunger.

Has he accumulate those wealth to acquire women to himself? and deny people of their rights, how many people has he been able to make rich?

It is a shameful thing to have the richest black man in Nigeria, when Ghana celebrate years of unblinking power supply, South Africa enjoys good road networks. But Nigeria NO.

Dangote is rich but useless to Nigeria and Nigerians.

  93. World Richest man on March 19th, 2010 9:41 pm

Dangote should contribute more to Nigeria other than just accumulating this money

  94. Liman ibrahim alhaji on March 25th, 2010 4:34 pm

nigeria man as the most richest in african at times we as a nigeria we need to ask ourselves a question, there is no good thing that come out from nigeria, to be honest i see this our so called rich men as demons, they never care for the masses i hate everything about them, i was given an assignment to write about this foolish men that called them selves rich men i could not do that because i hate to talk about them. they are the one spoiling this country and if you like come and get me arrest my God will one day punish all of you, IDIOTS.

  101. Dotun on July 19th, 2010 5:10 pm

Its laughable to think that Aliko Dangote is the richest man in Africa, would you like to know other rich men in Nigeria? Poeple like Obasanjo, Ali Gusau, Babangida, and Abacha’s family are by lenghts richer than Dangote.
May be the politicians are not included in the list because we have many rich Governors, senators and former presidents in Nigeria.

i congratulate him for his economic succeses.
